    National Informatics Centre (NIC) is a premiere S&T; institution of the Government of India, established in 1976, for providing e-Government/e-Governance Solutions adopting best practices, integrated services and global solutions in Government Sector.
    In 1975, the Government of India strategically decided to take effective steps for the development of information systems and utilization of information resources and also for introducing computer based decision support system (informatics-led development) in government ministries and departments to facilitate planning and programme implementation to further the growth of economic and social development. Following this,the Central Government nucleated a high priority plan project “National Informatics Centre (NIC)” in 1976, and later on with the financial assistance of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to the tune of US$4.4 million.

    NIC has played an important role of an active catalyst and facilitator in informatics development programme in Governments at the national, state and district levels, during the last 26 years which made them take policy decisions to create knowledge societies – societies that can exploit knowledge to derive competitive advantage using the opportunities provided by digital technology. NIC has been instrumental in adopting Information Technology and Communication Technology to reach out into India i.e. by implementing IT applications in Social and Public Administrations.

    NIC Goa State Centre and NIC District Centres at both the Collectorates cater to the ICT needs of Government of Goa as well as various Central Government nodal offices within Goa. National Informatics Centre (NIC) of the Department of Information Technology, Government of India, is providing eGovernance support to Central Government, State Governments, UT Administrations, Districts and other Government bodies. It offers a wide range of ICT services including Nationwide Communication Network (NICNET) for decentralised planning, improvement in Government services and wider transparency of national and local Governments.NIC Headquarters is based in New Delhi. At NIC Headquarters, a large number of Application Divisions exist which provide total Informatics Support to the Ministries, Departments of the Central Government and to the State Governmnets.

    NIC Goa has been providing software, hardware and web hosting support to State and Central Government departments in Goa. The services include study of user requirements, identifying and prioritizing areas for computerisation, system design, development, implementation and training, technical support for hardware procurement, Networking, LAN, WAN, Video Conferencing etc.

    NIC Goa has set up state-of-the-art technology and a Tier-3 level Data Centre which ensures 99.9% uptime and providing at least 72 hours of power outage protection.

    NIC Goa Data Center, facilitates Network Operation Centre (NOC) for National Knowledge Network (NKN). NKN, Goa provides high speed fiber connectivity to knowledge based institutions such as, Goa University, Goa Medical College, Goa Engineering College, State Data Centre(SDC) and Goa BroadBand Network (GBBN) i.e State SWAN, for integrating and extending Government of India services to Goa Government Departments.

    NIC Network Operation Centre Goa, is providing Internet, network services and end-point security to approximately 15000 client to various Government department and educational institutions.
