History

Starting as a small programme under an external stimulus by an UNDP project in early 1970s, NIC started functioning in 1977 and since then it has grown incrementally and later exponentially as one of India's major S&T Organisations promoting Informatics-led development, which has helped to usher in the required transformation to cope with the trends in the new millennium. NIC was set up with the objective to promote economic, social, scientific and technological activities, and also for macro-economic adjustment programme of the Government, through the applications of IT.

The organizational set up of NIC encompasses its Headquarters at New Delhi, State Centers in all the 28 State capitals and 7 Union Territory Headquarters and District centres in all the Districts of India. The Organization employs a large pool of efficient technical manpower.

NIC Headquarters is based in New Delhi. At NIC Headquarters, a large number of Application Divisions exist, which provide total Informatics Support to the Ministries and Departments of the Central Government. NIC computer cells are located in almost all the Ministry Bhawans of the Central Government and Apex Offices including the Prime Minister's Office, the Rashtrapati Bhawan and the Parliament House. Apart from this, NIC has various Resource Divisions at the Headquarters which specialize into different areas of IT and facilitate the Application Divisions as well as other NIC Centres in providing state-of-the-art services to the Govt.

NIC Goa State Centre was established in 1989. The Center was functioning from the North Goa District Collectorate.

There are 2 districts in Goa : North Goa and South Goa.

North Goa District Informatics Centre (DIC) was established in 1989.

South Goa District Informatics Centre (DIC) was established in 1990.

A Computer Cell in the Secretariat was established in 1993, to cater to the requirements of Secretariat. This center is equipped with state of the art Data Center with SAN and Network Operation Center connecting both District Collectorates and all 11 Taluka Offices with Leased Lines.

The Goa Government Computer Centre was merged with NIC in October 1994. NIC Goa State Centre started functioning from October 1994.

A spacious Training hall, with classroom and labs, was established in 1996.

In 2004 NIC Goa established State Wide Area Network GOANET and SAN based Data Center at Goa Secretariat to cater the connectivity and application requirements of all departments.
